Melbourne born artist, Malcolm Webster is an established technician in his chosen mediums of watercolour, oil and mixed media. His passion and mastery of the difficult watercolour medium has won him over 140 major Victorian Watercolour Art Prizes including the Camberwell Australian Landscape Award. He has twice each of these three, Mt Waverley, St Kevin’s and the Buller Prize viewers choice.
Malcolm graduated in Art and Design from RMIT in 1970 and worked as a designer, specialising in consumer products. He formed his own consultancy in 1985. During this time Malcolm also lectured in illustration and perspective drawing at The National Institute of Design at Swinburne University. He was an associate of the Design Institute of Australia for 15 years. During this period, he produced and sold over 2000 limited edition prints and originals.
In 1987 he changed direction to architectural illustration, producing photo simulations for town planners and tribunals. This switch to illustration of buildings and scenery led Malcolm back to painting. He became a full time painter in 1996. In the last 10 years he has produced and sold 600 works, performed demonstrations, and held workshops in watercolour technique for art societies and select students. He is also an art judge and teacher on the subject. He has renewed his first love in oil landscapes and his painting, Mist over Merrijig, was runner up in the 2009 ‘R and M McGivern Prize’
Malcolm also creates eyecatching contemporary works, mainly in vivid reds, adding his own cast metal inlays of richly plated 24 carat gold and nickel. His work has been on display at Maling Road Gallery, Artists Realm, David Sumner Gallery, Original Oz Gallery, Ecliptic Gallery and Gallery Beneath (Qld).
With 16 exhibitions to his credit, his work is now in many private collections and permanent regional galleries.
